WINE COUNTRY: Temecula

Winery Listings

The Temecula wine region is a shining example of the harmonious marriage of wine technology and California winemaking insight. Unlike other wine centers, Temecula is rather new, having been "discovered" as an ideal climate and soil zone for wine just in this past century.

Misty morning fog, leading to warm, but temperate days, provides a long, stable growing season. Similar in many ways to the Central Coast, Temecula wineries produce excellent Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, and more recently Viognier, Syrah and Pinot Gris.

Temecula possesses a unique micro.climate
creating an early growing season from March through September. The harvest season is rarely afflicted by rains, which contributes both to the flavor and consistency of Temecula wines. Cool air flowing inland moderates the daytime temperatures and helps to create a pattern of warm, sunny days and cool nights, ideal conditions for excellent wines.

Temecula's light, sandy loam soil, comprised mostly of  decomposing granite, permits water to drain easily. This forces the roots to grow deeper to find water, resulting in stronger vines and smaller grapes. ideal for highly concentrated flavor.

Temecula wineries, although youthful in comparison to the old-guard of California wines, use their technical skill and  unique growing conditions to make outstanding wines. While many of the wineries use traditional barrel aging to create classically styled wines, many showcase the Temecula fruit, with less focus on barrel flavors.

Temecula has become one of the fastest expanding wine growing areas in California, and worth a special trip for a unique treat.
