WINE REGIONS: South and east from San Francisco, across the bay, Alameda County produces wines that these days easily rivals those of Sonoma and Napa. At its heart lies the Livermore Valley, one of California's oldest wine regions. The Livermore wine region played a pivotal role in shaping California's wine industry. Robert Livermore planted the first commercial vines in the 1840s, and was soon followed by wine pioneers C. H. Wente, James Concannon and Charles Wetmore. They recognized Livermore's ideal climate, soil, and geographical conditions, and soon exploited its potential. In fact, Livermore Valley captured America's first international gold medal for wine at the Paris Exposition in 1889, putting California in its justifiable place as one of the world's best wine producing regions!
