WINE REGIONS: California's Central Coast California's Central Coast wine region is defined by its proximity to the ocean. The mountain ranges run east to west, and open to the ocean. These natural "alleys" allow the cool ocean fog and breezes to flow into the coastal valleys and their vineyards. This moderate climate, a combination of foggy mornings, mid-day sun, and afternoon breezes, provides a long growing season and slow, even ripening of the grapes. Slower ripening and a longer season translates into more intense flavors in the grapes, and ultimately, the wine. The Central Coast is comprised of five main growing areas: Arroyo Grande Valley, Edna Valley, Paso Robles, Santa Ynez Valley, and Santa Maria Valley. And although similar in climate and topology, each have slightly different microclimates which affect the varietals grown and the styles of wines produced. Much of this area, often referred to as the Santa Barbara Coast, is former ocean bottom. A high concentration of sand and limestone combined with the rocky, alluvial soils deposited by the runoff from the surrounding mountains create a unique soil composition. Excellent drainage and low nutrition combine to encourage root development, reduced vine growth, a lower water-to-sugar ratio, and ultimately, highly concentrated flavors. This region's wine heritage dates back over 200 years, where the first vines were planted by Franciscan monks. Used primarily for Sacramental wines, the began making brandy as a revenue source. As settlers moved into the valleys around Santa Barbara, vineyard acreage grew dramatically, mostly from cuttings brought over from Europe, and many families began producing wine commercially. In the past 10 years, the Central Coast has matured and grown into a world-class wine region. Growers sell much of their grapes wineries throughout California, and many premium award-winning wines are produced by the region's wineries. From Chardonnay to Viognier, with a healthy dose of Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, and many Italian varietals and blends, the Central Coast provides a unique and enjoyable wine tasting excursion.
