WILSON on WINE

Hey there!

Did you read my last Whine column?
Well read it (again) - so I don't have to take up space apologizing for the delay again in this one!

OK, let's get down to the grape squeezin's. Taste any good wines lately?

Thanks for asking! As a matter of fact, I may have had the best wine ever.
(No, this does not contradict my first column of the same name that referred to Boone's Farm Apple Wine).

Right now, I don't think I can really recall exactly how I learned of Silkwood. It just may have been that some remarkably good-hearted person took it upon himself (despite the continuing draconian laws against such kindness) to forward me a bottle of their 100% Syrah which had just scarfed up a handful of Gold Medals at a host of California tastings. In any case, it was as the French say "tray yummay" (their highest rating!).

After several on-air rants about the big, smooth, velvety quality of the 100% Syrah, should appear in my mail pouch but a bottle of Silkwood 1999 Petite Syrah.

Write it down. Print this screen: This is the one!

Now, I have had some wine in my time and, needless to say, some were real killers. I am constantly thanking a certain Wine God to have been close enough to get a sniff and even a taste. Now, I probably need to start tithing now that I have secured not without some skullduggery - 12 bottles of this magnificent grape juice! You should do the same; it's moderately priced. But Wine Lovers tend to ignore sticker shock if they know they are getting big value for the buck. And as noted above this is the one: 1999 Silkwood Petite Syrah.

Other brief sniffs of the cork:

  • 2000 St Francis Old Vines Zin still, consistently, an excellent bottle of wine.
  • Topolos Zinfindel Port! - Finally scored a few cases of the discontinued/bought out Buffalo Ridge Zin. (Unfortunately, I got the 1999 which couldn't hold a candle to the 98)
  • Silver Oak Savignon Blanc nice summer/hot weather wine. Light. Fresh. Nice beak.
  • Ditto Mayo!

Out of space! More wines next time!
