WILSON on WINE

OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry (repeat)
This really is a Whine Column!

Forgive me, Dear Reader for I have co- and o-mitted.
It has been beyond too long since I my last column.
It's not that I am without perfectly legitimate explanations:
Katie, my oldest Golden Retriever had to be put to sleep.
We moved.
We bought a radio station.
Need I say more?
'Nuff said let's move on.

Of course, now the problem is trying to catch up! And with all of the above, all my napkin notes, old corks and emptied bottles I've used for reference have gone the way of all “Important Papers and Personal Effects” that always seem to disappear when you move, start a business or both.

Couple of things from what's left of my (alleged) memory:

“Wine glut” This was part of a San Fran Chronicle headline a few weeks back and was part of a discussion we had on my KSFO show. The story spoke of great growth, great grapes and, now, too much great grape juice sloshing around Napa, Sonoma, etc. Don't ya hate it when that happens?!?!? Looks like some great bottles are on the way and at very reasonable prices!!

Schug Pinot Noir! I've not been a pinot fan. Too much like French burgundy to me. But then, I don't know what's good; I only know what I like. In an impulsive moment (ya know the kind of instance where you actually learn something by mistake!?) I bought this bottle and was knocked out! It was a recent vintage but I don't have the bottle anymore (see graph 3 above) to give you the exact year. But if you see one, buy it, drink it, enjoy it even if you're not a big pinot fan like I used to be!

Wildhorse zin!! Had dinner before seeing the Smothers Brothers in Easton, PA a few Saturdays ago. The wine list was limited in the Zin Dept. That is to say 3 bottles were offered! Rancho Zabacco and two others I never heard of before. After employing my highly scientific “eeny-meeny” selection method, my finger was pointing at “Wildhorse” $36. Figuring this is probably $18-$19 in the store, I gave it a go. What a great bottle! All the heft and berry power I like in a Zin without being too fruity! Not a ton of spice/pepper which I'm not fond of either, preferring my pepper from a mill not a bottle of wine. Now all I have to do is find a local retailer that sells it. (Easier said than done).

The other little piece of Good News was word that legislation is being either passed or declared unconstitutional that has prohibited CA wineries from dealing directly with their biggest Fans (that would be moi). Hopefully that means that getting my favorite wines way over here on the Right (not necessarily Correct) Coast will become infinitely easier!
We hope! We hope! We hope!

OK- that's it for now.

I hereby promise to do better, keep more recent, be more specific. But I did tell you I've moved….bought a radio station….!

Clink!
