About Wines - GewürztraminerGewürztraminerGewürztraminer is one of the most distinctive of all white table wines. It possesses a bold, exotically flowery aroma reminiscent of litchi nuts, rose petals, clove and honeysuckle. With its full-bodied texture and intensely spicy flavors, it is often paired with ripe cheeses, spicy asian foods, and heavily creamed dishes that require a fairly acidic touch to compliment. In its classical style as produced in Alsace, France, it is moderatley-to-extremely dry. Gewürztraminer is grown widely in California but has never achieved the popularity enjoyed by its oft compared cousin, Johannesburg Riesling. California Gewürztraminers lean to the slightly sweet side (off-dry) in order to mask the hint of bitterness that occasionally shows through. This style of Gewürztraminer, with a residual sugar level between 1.0 and 4 percent is primarily marketed as "picnic wine" intended to be served well chilled. Gewürztraminer is on rare occasion attacked by "botrytis cynerea" or "Noble Rot," a mold that attacks the grape causing it to shrink and shrivel much like a raisin. This concentrates the sugar level while maintaining the grape's natural acidity. Wines produced from these grapes, often labeled as "Late Harvest," are intensely sweet with a distinctively perfumed aroma. In Anderson Valley in northern Sonoma county (near Healdsburg), several winemakers produce the true Alsatian style wines- dry, with noble characteristics. Try dry Gewürztraminer with ripe Gorgonzola and Walnut salad or Blackened Pork Chops for a unique tasting treat.
