TOURISM WHISTLER ANNOUNCES DATES FOR CORNUCOPIA 2002 Whistler, B.C. - Tourism Whistler has announced the dates for Cornucopia, Whistler's annual celebration of food and wine for November 4-10, 2002. This year will mark the sixth annual festival, which features the talents and trade secrets of the region's leading chefs and winemakers. Cornucopia will return with a variety of themed tasting events, celebrity chef showcases, winemaker dinners and Cornucopia's annual signature gala event, Crush! This year's festival will also offer a new component specifically designed for the restaurant and hospitality industry. A new, expanded three-day trade program will be added to complement the popular weekend consumer events. The 2001 event featured trade events such as The Language of Wine entry-level wine course, Evolution of the American Wine Barrel, and Emerging Trends in Organics seminars, and a Trade Tasting event featuring all participating Cornucopia vintners. "We had a very positive response to our trade events last year and will continue to build on this theme," says Gwen Young, Manager, Festivals, Tourism Whistler. "In addition to the lineup of popular consumer events, we are planning some exciting new elements that will widen the scope of the trade program to focus on the interests of professionals in the food and wine industries." Cornucopia 2001, which was held November 6-10, featured presentations from some of the region's most acclaimed chefs, seminars by food and wine experts and wine tastings all featuring the best of the Pacific Northwest. Chef Showcases presented Bob Blumer, host of the off-the-wall Food Network program The Surreal Gourmet, and John Sarich from Chateau Ste Michelle Winery, and host of his own television show Best of Taste.. Flavours of the Pacific Coast. Wine Access Magazine's first Canadian Wine Awards Presented by Air Canada were presented at Cornucopia last year, as well. Cornucopia's popular annual headline event, Crush!, featured 54 wineries from British Columbia, Washington State, Oregon and California including Hanna Winery (CA), Wild Goose (BC), Panter Creek (OR) and Chateau Ste. Michelle (WA). Cornucopia 2001 raised more than $10,000 for the Whistler Health Care Foundation through various events, which will go toward new diagnostic equipment for the Whistler Health Care Centre. Whether it's food and wine, sports, music, comedy or fine arts and culture, Whistler offers a wide range of summer festivals and family events for everyone. Street Entertainment (May-September) throughout the village will make the streets of Whistler come alive with a variety of entertainment from jugglers and magicians, to world beat musicians on weekends May 18 through June 30, and daily, July 1 through September 2. New this year is Whistler's free Family Cabaret Night with performances each Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., July 3 - August 28 in the Town Plaza Gazebo. Whistler Upper Village Farmer's Market (June to October) is a lively weekly event located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain. Held each Sunday throughout the summer, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., the farmers market features locally-grown seasonal fruits and vegetables and offerings from Whistler-area artisans. Paddlefest (June 7-9) will feature the exceptional paddle sport opportunities on Whistler's beautiful alpine lakes. The first festival of this kind in Whistler, Paddlefest will showcase three days of demos, clinics and exhibitions of canoeing and kayaking along with food and entertainment. Whistler's Jazz and Blues Weekend Presented by Visa (June 15,16) will bring the vibrant music scene to the streets of Whistler. Swing, gospel, blues, Latin jazz and classic jazz vocals will be featured all weekend at both free and ticketed, daytime and evening performances throughout the village. Whistler Arts Experience (July 4-6) will showcase Whistler's talented artists and performers during three days of public displays, gallery walks and entertainment. Weetama (August 12-18) is Whistler's second annual celebration of Aboriginal culture, which will feature the art, music and dance of the region's First Nations communities. Showcase events will include a traditional feast, film, workshops and numerous performances. Whistler Comedy Festival (September 18-22) is the most fun visitors will have in Whistler without snow. "Laughs a Mile High" will feature some of the world's top comedy talent. Oktoberfest (October 25-26) is Whistler's answer to the fall celebration of beer and bratwurst. Whistler's alpine village is the perfect setting for the traditional beer hall complete with oom-pah-pah music, folk dancing and a root beer garden for the kids.
