WINE EVENTS: Close-up ENJOY WARM MEMORIES, HOT CHEFS AND COOL WINES AT THE ARC'S 35th ANNUAL SAN FRANCISCO WINE AUCTION & TASTING (San Francisco, CA) The 35th Annual San Francisco Wine Auction & Tasting, a showcase of the Bay Area's hottest new chefs and premier wineries, is the primary annual benefit for The Arc, a non-profit agency dedicated to serving people with developmental disabilities and their families since 1951. This year, the focal point of the Wine Auction & Tasting will be on guest speaker and motivational hero Karen Gaffney while, at the same time, maintaining the event's engaging celebration of fine food, great wine and client art. The 2001 benefit will be held on Sunday, December 2 at San Francisco's Argent Hotel, located on Third at Market. The evening begins with hors d'oeuvres, wine tasting reception, and a silent auction at 5:00 p.m. and is followed by a formal, four-course chefs' tasting menu with paired wines and live auction. Tickets are $175 per person. With the world currently in such disarray, inspirational speaker Karen Gaffney's address couldn't be more timely. As celebrated hero living with Downs Syndrome, Gaffney will recount some of her heroic accomplishments including her recent swim across the English Channel. At 23, Gaffney has earned her Associates of Science degree from Portland Community College and holds a Teacher's Aid Certificate which she has put to good use working in schools throughout Portland, Oregon. A quote from Gaffney in a recent Portland Oregonian feature, “Yes, we are different. Yes, we have special needs. But we also are filled with potential and abilities and dreams that were never thought possible, even a few years ago.” Founded in 1951, The Arc's mission is to serve people with developmental disabilities and their families by promoting self-determination; ensuring equal access to housing, health care, employment, recreation and transportation; preventing violations of civil rights; and supporting activities that will result in reducing the incidence of developmental disabilities. In fulfilling the mandate of this mission, the agency offers a wide range of services to men and women with disabilities, including vocational training and placement in community work sites and competitive jobs; independent living training; mobility; personal safety and self-advocacy training; food service and janitorial training for people with special needs; social and recreational activities for senior citizens and persons with more severe disabilities; and information/referral. Nearly 700 people are served daily. For more information and reservations, please call: The Arc at (415) 255-7200.
