Gregory Bondar Australian Wines Just Keep Getting Better… According to statistics, one new winery emerges on the Australian wine scene every seventy five hours, which means by the time you read this article there will be even more labels to taste. One notable wine top emerge comes from the Brini label in McLaren Vale in South Australia. John Brini and his Italian family have been growing grapes in McLaren Vale since the late 1940's with the Sebastian vineyard being established in 1947. At this point in time, I do not consider Brini to be an investment wine or in fact even a new cult wine, however, it remains a top Australian wine that is the result of having an old vines vineyard in the right place. The wines present an abundance of ripe fruit flavours and the wine is filled with character and delivers the sort of memorable pleasure associated with long Sunday lunches – the wine reflects what life is all about – for ‘living'. This is where wine was, before the investors, speculators and collectors came onto the scene. Tasting Notes: The Brini Sebastian Shiraz is very deep crimson colour, with deep crimson hue. Superb nose, with aroma of spice, black pepper, plum and dark chocolate over a background of stewed fruit. The palate has excellent weight, with flavours of spice and black pepper emerging. Excellent length and persistence. Fine grained tannins, followed by a very long aftertaste of plum and black pepper. Cellar 4-5 years (2006-2007). Alc/Vol 14%
